Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) have been installed in several LTS facilities, in addition to other campus locations.

According to the American Heart Association, sudden cardiac arrest is responsible for 600 deaths per day in the US. Immediate treatment, however, yields survival rates as high as 70%. The only way to treat this serious condition is with an electric shock from an AED.

AEDs are commonly found in a variety of locations including office buildings, shopping malls, and houses of worship. Lehigh University has several AEDs on-campus, all funded by departments, to aid in the event of sudden cardiac arrest.

AEDs are designed to be used by lay individuals without any special training. Lehigh is required, as an owner of AEDs, to ensure that expected AED users receive appropriate training so that they can help a fellow community member without delay or apprehension. It is important to note that the Pennsylvania Good Samaritan law protects AED users (trained or untrained) from civil liability, provided that they act in good faith and not in a grossly negligent manner.

An AED is not a replacement for professional medical care. Lehigh University Police & EMS (x8-4200) must be summoned immediately upon discovering a medical emergency. Be aware that calling 9-911 from on-campus will route your call to the City of Bethlehem Police and will significantly delay the arrival of assistance.
