Position Description - The P.C. Rossin College of Engineering & Applied Science at Lehigh University invites nominations and applications from qualified individuals for the position of Chair of the Electrical and Computer Engineer-ing (ECE) department. We seek an outstanding individual with visionary skills to lead an active faculty team and grow the department to new levels of excellence. The successful candidate will provide leadership to the department, recruit and mentor outstanding new faculty, work with all ECE faculty and with related departments in the university, promote partnerships with industry, further strengthen department teaching and curriculum, and foster relationships with alumni and the local community.

Lehigh University is investing more than $250M over the next few years on new innovative research and academic programs to enhance its intellectual footprint. The investments, based on faculty-driven initiatives, will advance the university’s mission and commitment to enhance student experiences. Investments will include upgrades to physical plant, laboratories, and technical infrastructure.

The ECE department at Lehigh has a long, rich history of advancing and innovating in the field and will celebrate the 125th anniversary of its first graduating class in 2017. The ECE department offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering (jointly with Computer Science & Engineering). Lehigh ECE offers educational and research programs which rank among the strongest in the nation and its faculty members are dedicated to the education and research experience. Its faculty have secured prestigious grants from funding agencies such as the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, and Department of Energy. ECE faculty have been recipients of five NSF CAREER awards, one PECASE award, and one ONR Young Investigator Award. Several ECE faculty members have won national awards and are Fellows of the IEEE, Optical Society of America, and American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering. One emeritus faculty is a member in the National Academy of Engineering. ECE has produced academics who hold faculty positions at Stanford University, University of California Santa Barbara, Georgia Institute of Technology, University at Buffalo, Case Western Reserve University, Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Tulsa, Clarkson University, KAUST and several leading international universities. The ECE undergraduate program has consistently produced excellent engineers who are highly sought after by both industry and graduate programs.

ECE’s strength is in cross-disciplinary research involving strong interactions with other engineering disciplines, the physical sciences, biological sciences and economics. ECE faculty provide successful leadership to major research activities on campus such as the Center for Photonics and Nanoelectronics and the Integrated Networks for Electricity Cluster. Research areas for the ECE department include: bio-electrical engineering, computer engineering, communications & signal processing, electronics & photonics, and energy systems, with several ECE faculty involved in robust and successful interdisciplinary teams.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or a related field, a distinguished record of re-search scholarship, and qualify for the rank of Full Professor R&P Tenured at Appointment. Ideal candidates will have demonstrated visionary leadership, strong interpersonal skills and administrative talent, and a commitment to continued excellence in research, teaching, and fostering diversity and inclusion among students and faculty. Highly qualified candidates may further be considered for an endowed professorship.
