Position Description - Founded in 1865, Lehigh University is a premier coeducational, nondenominational, private residential research university that offers a distinctive academic environment for undergraduate and graduate students from across the globe.

Located in Pennsylvania’s scenic Lehigh Valley, the campus is in close proximity to both New York City and Philadelphia. Lehigh is situated on over 2,300 acres on four campuses. The Asa Packer Campus, Mountaintop Campus, and Murray H. Goodman Campus are contiguous and feature more than 153 buildings with over 4.3 million square feet of classroom, laboratory, office, and living space. The campus also has 180 acres of playing fields and half of the campus is preserved as open space.

The university has four colleges: The College of Arts and Sciences, The College of Business and Economics, The College of Education, and The P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science. The colleges offer over 80 graduate programs and more than 90 undergraduate programs, including four distinctive cross-college undergraduate degree programs: Integrated Degree in Engineering, Arts, and Sciences (IDEAS); Integrated Business and Engineering (IBE); Computer Science and Business (CSB); and Arts Engineering.

Lehigh has 460 full-time tenure-track faculty members and 70 non-tenure-track teaching faculty members; 64% of the full-time faculty is tenured, and 99% of full-time tenure-track faculty members hold a doctorate degree or the highest degree in their fields. Lehigh has approximately 5,000 undergraduate and 2,000 professional and graduate students. A student-to-faculty ratio of 9:1 allows undergraduate students to work closely with professors, including as active members of their research programs. The university has approximately 1,200 staff members supporting its educational, research, and administrative functions. The University’s budget is $505 million and its endowment has a market value of over $1.3 billion. In the fall of 2016, Lehigh announced its “Path to Prominence,” an ambitious plan that will allow it to grow and evolve into an even more impactful and innovative university—one whose work will change lives, and the world, for the better. The primary underlying initiatives include a 20% growth of the faculty and the student body; the creation of a new College of Health; an expansive effort to grow its research, educational, and residential facilities; and the continuing growth of the university’s research and creative activities, scholarship, and intellectual impact. This implementation, including the construction of facilities, will take 6–8 years to fully deploy, but is already underway. In October 2018, the university will launch the $1 billion-plus Campaign for Lehigh, which will increase endowed funds for scholarships and financial aid by $400 million and expand the educational and research missions of the university. ? THE COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES As Lehigh’s largest and most diverse college, with 18 departments and 21 interdisciplinary programs, the college is home to the social sciences, arts, humanities, and natural sciences. With 1,658 undergraduate students, 375 graduate students, 248 full-time faculty and 93 professional staff, the college is comparable in size and offers the intimacy of a liberal arts college, yet benefits from the resources of a research university. Faculty are accomplished scholars, artists, and writers, recognized nationally and internationally as leaders in their fields, who share a commitment to the integration of teaching and scholarship into innovative, dynamic curricula set in an intellectually stimulating environment.

Undergraduate and graduate programs prepare students for the complexity of the world they will discover upon graduation, where they will find competing visions and values which they must work to understand and to which they must respond effectively. The college is a space for vigorous dialogue. Students are trained to anticipate and lead change, to view challenges as opportunities, to turn knowledge into action, and to make a difference in the world. The College seeks to maximize student growth and development while placing the individual in the broader context of human culture and the natural world. Classrooms extend beyond four walls to the broader community and to countries spanning the globe.

POSITION SUMMARY The Dean of Arts and Sciences leads all academic and administrative activities of the College. The Dean reports to the Provost of Lehigh University and serves as a key member of the University’s leadership team. The next Dean will be expected to continue to define and execute strategic priorities, refine appropriate administrative structures, generate productive relationships with supporters, and continue to build connections within the School, across the University, and with appropriate external institutional partners.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Work closely with the faculty within CAS, the provost, the president, and the Deans and faculty of the other colleges to provide leadership for Lehigh's undergraduate and graduate education program in a rapidly changing world;

Enhance and prioritize the growth of research, scholarship, and creative activity in the College;

Provide a strong commitment to the humanities and the liberal arts in today’s challenging environment; Lead the enhancement and expansion of doctoral programs in the College;

Develop and encourage both interdisciplinary scholarship and the performance of individual departments and programs;

Recruit, develop, and retain outstanding and broadly diverse cohorts of faculty and staff;

Create an atmosphere that strengthens and affirms diversity and inclusion, with a particular focus on women and underrepresented minorities;

Support the University’s mission of internationalization;

Oversee a College in which decision making and resource allocation are fair, just, and transparent;

Contribute to the strategic development and tactical execution of a capital campaign;

Strengthen relationships and obtain external financial support from alumni, donors, and other key stakeholders;

Serve as an engaged and committed university-wide leader.

The Dean will have administrative experience, preferably within a large, complex, academic organization.

The Dean will have experience effectively communicating with various constituencies, including students, faculty and staff members, fellow administrators, alumni, trustees, and donors.

CRITICAL LEADERSHIP CAPABILITIES Commitment to scholarship and teaching As the leader of Lehigh’s largest and most diverse college, the Dean of CAS must be a scholar and educational leader with a deep appreciation for the values of the liberal arts within the natural sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities. Working across 35+ departments and interdisciplinary programs, the next Dean will be intellectually curious about a broad array of disciplines. The successful candidate must be a bold and creative leader, prepared to proactively engage the College community to develop a shared vision to address the rapidly changing academic environment and the opportunities it presents to further distinguish Lehigh’s leadership, reputation, and impact.

Bridge Building With four, soon to be five colleges, Lehigh is an institution distinguished by a culture of collaboration. The Dean will build connections and model positive engagement between CAS and other units within the University. The Dean will strike a balance of advocating for CAS while serving as an institutional citizen, seeking ways to strengthen the profile of CAS while fostering a culture where all work in the best interests of the University. The Dean will be a particularly important partner in the establishment of the new Health College through the development of research collaborations and the provision of core undergraduate education.

Attracting Talent and Resources As the University seeks to expand its undergraduate and graduate student population by approximately 20 percent, the Dean will be a critical leader in helping drive the recruitment of academic talent and financial resources to support this growth. The Dean will be a team builder who is capable of identifying, attracting, and developing top faculty, particularly across a wide-range of disciplines beyond his or her own. As a key spokesperson for the institution, the Dean will build relationships with external constituencies and partner with the provost and other leaders in the cultivation and stewardship of donors. The Dean will have the opportunity to set a strategic vision for CAS that will be compelling and motivating for stakeholders both inside and outside of the institution.
